Allergic Fungal Sinusitis

Adult-onset asthma refers to asthma diagnosed after age 20. In contrast to childhood asthma, it typically persists into adulthood and requires ongoing management.

At Alabama ENT & Allergy, our board-certified specialists—Dr. Carol Smith, Dr. Sunena Argo, Michelle Payne (CRNP), and Amber Nelson (CRNP)—provide expert diagnosis and individualized treatment plans to help patients breathe easier.

Recognizing The
Symptoms

Common symptoms of adult-onset asthma include:

Wheezing, especially when exhaling

Chest tightness or pressure

Persistent cough

Shortness of breath, particularly after exertion

Prolonged colds (lasting more than 10 days)

Identifying Triggers in Your Environment

Asthma triggers vary among individuals, but often include:
  • Outdoor allergens like pollen from grass, trees, and weeds
  • Indoor allergens—pet dander, dust mites, mold
  • Irritants—smoke, pollution, chemical fumes, strong odors (e.g., perfume)
  • Medications or food additives
  • Respiratory infections (cold, flu, etc.)
  • Emotional stress, laughter, or crying
  • Exercise (which generally benefits asthma sufferers, but may need adjustment)
  • Weather changes, including temperature or humidity shifts
