Balloon sinuplasty is a recent non-invasive surgical procedure that's employed by ear, nose and throat surgeons to treat blocked sinuses. Approved by the FDA, the treatment is a solid option for chronic sinusitis patients who are unable to ease their condition with medications like nasal sprays or for those who can’t stand traditional endoscopy surgery.
How does Balloon Sinuplasty work?
Balloon sinuplasty can be described as a minimally invasive treatment for chronic sinusitis. The procedure involves inserting a thin tube inside the nostril before advancing it towards the opening of the sinus cavity. A balloon catheter(tube)is then advanced close to the opening of the blocked sinus using a guide wire.
The balloon is then inflated to widen sinus passageways. Normal drainage of mucus and other liquids is restored once the passageways are widened. This treatment works because the act of inflating the balloon completely remodels the bone and dilates the sinus walls.
Safe with minimal complications:
Balloon sinuplasty procedures are safe and less likely to cause serious complications, unlike other options, such as traditional endoscopy sinus surgery. Recent research conducted on 900 patients did not find any notable complications resulting from the procedure.
Effective:
Balloon sinuplasty procedures are proven to ease chronic sinusitis symptoms. According to recent studies, it’s been proven that the method is as good as other more invasive surgical options.
Convenient:
Due to their non-invasive nature, balloon sinuplasty procedures can be performed in physician offices comfortably under local anesthesia.
Quick recovery:
Patients who opt for Balloon sinuplasty tend to recover quickly because there’s less bleeding. Also, the procedure produces lasting results, meaning a patient won’t need to worry about symptoms reoccurring.
Balloon sinuplasty procedures are proven to relieve chronic sinusitis symptoms with ease. They are less invasive, safe, effective, and convenient.
